Scope and Content of R&D (Functional Materials)

Filter / Nano Wiper® / Separator

Filter creates clean air and earth Nano Wiper® wipes micro dust. Separator is required for new electric devices. We are working to develop new products by adding value to nonwoven fabric.

Functional filters

Contributing to the green issue is one of our important missions. Based on our unique technology, we have developed various filter products with many outstanding functions. These products are used in houses, vehicles, and offices as the key component of air purifiers and energy saving ventilation systems.

Photocatalytic sheet

Photocatalysts is a material that decomposes organic substances under the radiation of UV light. This material can be applied for deodorization, antibacterial treatment, and antifouling.* Titanium oxide is the most common material among photocatalysts, but it is difficult to fix it on polymeric substrate because the substrate itself can be attacked by the photocatalytic effect. Our newly developed technology, where titanium oxide is combined with another inorganic absorbent, enabled long lasting photocatalystic sheet.

*: Antifouling: a technology that prevents dirt from adhering to the surface by changing the hydrophilic character of the surface with the photocatalytic effect.

Full Heat Exchange Paper

The full heat exchange element is a functional filter that enables ventilation without losing heat or cooling temperatures. The element is made of full heat exchange paper, which allows heat and moisture to pass through but shuts out gases like CO2. The paper membrane is made from pulp fibers using our unique thin paper manufacturing technology.

Liquid filter material

Our liquid filter material consists of two different layers: the support layer and the filtration layer. Although it has superior filtration efficiency, the filter material provides a low pressure drop. The material is mainly used for electric discharge machines (EDM).

Nano Wiper®

Nano Wiper® is a sheet product made from specially fibrillated fibers. The nanometer-size fibers (one-billionth of a meter) provide excellent wiping efficiency.


Separator is a component of batteries and capacitors that prevents the anode and the cathode from making contact Based on our nonwoven material technology, we are developing high performance separators for next generation batteries and capacitors.

Heat Storage Capsule / Desiccant Air Conditioner / Dye-sensitized Solar Cell

Heat storage capsule developed from micro capsule technology Desiccant air conditioner in which paper making technology was applied Solar cell created from dye synthesis technology.
We are challenging to expand the horizon of our technology to create new products that go one step further.

Heat storage microcapsule

Based on technology of our long selling product, non-carbon paper, we have developed heat storage microcapsule. Non-carbon paper, which is widely used for business forms, comprises developer pigment and a microcapsule containing dye solution. From the writing pressure, the dye microcapsule collapses and releases dye. The dye forms a colored substance from the reaction with the developer pigment.
In the heat storage microcapsule, heat storage material is contained instead of the dye solution. In the heating and cooling cycle, the capsule absorbs and releases heat as the encapsulated material melts and freezes in response to the surrounding temperature. Clothes treated with microcapsule provide constant comfort in every temperature.

Desiccant air conditioner

Based on our inherent specialty, papermaking technology, we developed a high performance dehumidifying rotor for desiccant air conditioners. Thanks to its low regeneration temperature, desiccant air conditioners equipped with this new dehumidifying rotor can become even more energy saving. This is a great benefit for large facilities, for example, large superstores.

DSC (Dye-sensitized Solar Cell)

Based on our know-how in organic synthesis for photographic materials, we developed a series of DSC dyes that show excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency.
DSC consists of a titanium oxide layer with adsorbed dye and an electrolyte layer sealed between two electrodes. Compared with existing solar cells based on silicone technology, DSC has big advantages in manufacturing cost and productivity of large devices because a high vacuum and high temperature are not necessary for production. We are developing further products and markets based on the core technology, functional dye synthesis.
