R&D [Research and Development System]

Laboratories

Our R&D structure comprises two centers:the ‘Advanced Technology Center (ATC)’, which handles company-wide research and development, and the 'Core Technology Center (CTC),' which conducts R&D based on our core paper and pulp technologies. The ATC is based at the Kyoto Mill. It is responsible not only for product development at the Kyoto Mill but also for the research and development of new businesses and products with an eye toward the company's future.
The CTC consists of three R&D offices—the Takasago R&D Office, Hachinohe R&D Office, and Fuji RR&D Office—located at the Takasago Mill, Hachinohe Mill, and Fuji Mill, respectively. Combining these three bases, each with different roots and fields of expertise, generates new synergies.

Advanced Technology Center:ATC

Kyoto R&D Center

At the ATC, we develop a wide variety of products, ranging from photographic paper and printing prepress materials to photo inkjet paper and electronics-related products. We achieve this by building upon our long-cultivated technologies in silver halide photography, photosensitive resins, and fine pigment dispersion, while utilizing highly clean aqueous and solvent-based coating facilities capable of simultaneous multilayer coating. Furthermore, to respond swiftly to the rapidly changing external environment, we actively promote collaborations and play a key role in creating new businesses and products that will drive the future of our company.
The ATC is based within the Kyoto Mill, whose predecessor, Kyoto Photo Industry, was established in 1938. Inherited here is a unique corporate culture that strives to create new businesses by fusing the core paper and pulp technologies of a paper manufacturing company with technologies from entirely different fields.

Core Technology Center:CTC
Takasago R&D Center

Takasago R&D Center

At the CTC Takasago R&D Office, we focus on the research and development of high-performance nonwoven fabrics, such as total heat exchange elements and heat-resistant sheets, by utilizing our core wet-laid nonwoven papermaking technology. The office is equipped with both laboratories for bench-scale testing and pilot production facilities that are scaled-down versions of the mill's commercial manufacturing lines, providing an environment where the entire R&D process can be conducted seamlessly in a single location.
The Takasago R&D Office is based at the historic Takasago Mill, the birthplace of our company, which is located within the Harima Coastal Industrial Zone and blessed with the mild climate of the Seto Inland Sea region and the abundant water resources of the Kakogawa River. Passed down here is a pioneering spirit to continuously generate next-generation technologies from our founding site.

Hachinohe R&D Office

Hachinohe Development Office

At the CTC Hachinohe R&D Office, we have swiftly adapted to the evolution of digital printing, moving beyond traditional offset printing to deliver cutting-edge industrial inkjet paper to the global market. Furthermore, to help realize a sustainable society, we are exploring new possibilities for 'paper and pulp' as carbon-neutral materials. We are also engaged in product development with an eye toward eco-friendly packaging as a plastic alternative, as well as applications for various industrial fields.
The Hachinohe R&D Office is based at the Hachinohe Mill, one of Japan’s largest-scale facilities, which boasts fully integrated mass production ranging from wood chips to finished paper and pulp products. Thriving here is a unique culture that harmonizes the future of the environment and industry by combining large-scale manufacturing expertise with the fundamental appeal of paper and pulp.

Fuji R&D Office

Fuji Development Office

At the CTC Fuji R&D Office, drawing upon our long-standing expertise, we spearhead the development of products like masking tape base paper, which is essential for building materials and automotive painting. Concurrently, we engage in the research and development of specialty papers that fundamentally support diverse industries, such as sterilization paper that protects medical devices and base paper for melamine decorative laminates that beautify various spaces.
The Fuji R&D Office is based at the historic Fuji Mill, which has been responsible for the research and development of specialty papers for over 80 years since its establishment in 1943, nestled at the foot of the majestic Mount Fuji, a World Cultural Heritage site. Deeply rooted in this land is a steadfast tradition as 'specialists in specialty paper development,' a title earned by meticulously responding to the diverse needs of each era and continuously imparting unique functionality and value to paper.
